Shipping is your future!
Shipping is action, responsibility and real teamwork – in the middle of a world that never stands still. Maybe this is exactly your path.
There are few things that excite you as much as looking at the ocean spreading out before you? Every one of us in the shipping industry feels that way. Thinking of travelling the vast expanses of the ocean inspires us, making us long for new experiences, discoveries and adventures beyond the horizon.
The sea not only awakens deep emotions, a sense of longing, and a desire to broaden our horizon. It covers two thirds of the earth’s surface and has been the most important means of transport for the international exchange of goods since time immemorial. The sea continues to be the main artery of world trade, and shipping sets the heartbeat of globalisation.
What you may not know: German ships play a leading role on the world’s oceans. German shipping companies operate one of the largest commercial fleets in the world, predominantly from locations in northern Germany.
The seafarers on our ships come from all over the world, with close to 7,000 calling Germany their home. Cultural diversity is what we live day by day together with our employees, and what defines the shipping sector. The German shipping industry transcends borders, not only by crossing the oceans but also by fostering teamwork among diverse crews on board its vessels. Jointly thinking outside the box and beyond the horizon is part of our everyday life. “Experiencing the world from a nutshell” is an apt description of the daily operation of our ships – with today’s “nutshells” sometimes more than 400 metres long and 60 metres wide, and equipped with more cutting-edge technology than a state-of-the-art commercial aircraft.
Interested in making the shipping sector your vocation? Then come on board – there are many ways to enter our fascinating world. Would our Holiday Sailing Programme for pupils be the right way for you to gain a first impression of ships and maritime jobs? Many shipping companies offer internships on board during the summer holidays. Or are you ready to embark on a combined work-while-studying programme to become a ship mechanic while familiarising yourself with all aspects of ship operation to eventually launch a career as a nautical or technical officer of the watch?
Does any of this sound exciting? We think so. Learn more on these pages, feel free to talk to us, and come on board!
