Ship mechanics are the all-rounders on board. They help maintain the ship’s engines, perform watch duties on the bridge, check the safety equipment on board, and monitor the loading process in port. Their job profile also includes conservation and painting work as well as metalworking (welding, turning). Ship mechanics are not only employed on cargo ships, cruise liners, ferries and tugboats. These multi-talented people also work in the offshore sector, at port-side and shipbuilding companies, and in maritime administration.
The apprenticeship takes three years. To become a ship mechanic, you must be at least 16 years old and need a certificate of seaworthiness for deck and engine service as well as technical understanding. The practical part of the training takes place on seagoing vessels, while the theory is taught at a maritime vocational college in sandwich courses. After successful completion, you may work as a ship mechanic or study at a technical college or university and train to become a nautical or technical officer.
