Automation, digitalisation, sensor technology – modern cargo and passenger ships have a lot of high-tech equipment on board. The ship’s electro-technical officer (ETO) takes care of this equipment. He or she is responsible for all electrical and electronic systems on the ship, from navigation and communication to electrical propulsion systems and the power supply system, as well as for the IT systems and networks on board. She or he works closely with the Chief Engineer to ensure that all digital interfaces function properly. With this wide range of tasks, the ETO makes a significant contribution to safety at sea and efficient, climate-friendly ship operation.

The job requires technical expertise and the ability to solve problems quickly. If you want to get started as an ETO on board, you should ideally have completed training as an electrical technician, undergone practical training, and served at sea, for example, as an electro-technical officer’s assistant (ETOA), and have completed a degree in electrical engineering in ship operations .
