When it comes to the technical operation of the ship, he is the undisputed authority: the head of the engine plant (“Chief Engineer” or just “Chief”) ensures that the main engine and auxiliary engines on the ships always run flawlessly. He provides key support to the captain. In addition to the required qualifications (certificate of competency), prospective chief engineers must have a high level of technical understanding and leadership skills.
The career path to a Chief Engineer position comprises several stages including practical training and time at sea, which may be acquired either through training as a ship mechanic or as a technical officer’s assistant, as well as a degree in marine engineering. After qualifying as a Technical Officer of the Watch, an aspiring chief engineer must go to sea for at least twelve months to obtain the “Second Technical Officer of the Watch” certificate of competency. To be promoted to Chief Engineer, graduates must have been active in this position for at least one year or have served as Technical Officer of the Watch for 36 months.
