“I have enjoyed sailing for many years, and in recent years I have increasingly realised that I would like to spend my future career at sea, on a cargo ship. That’s why I was looking for an opportunity to get a taste of seafaring through an internship. I am fascinated by the complex world of shipping, especially the daily processes and challenges on board a large cargo ship. The summer seafaring programme offers me the perfect opportunity to gain practical experience and get to know life and work at sea first hand. I will spend three weeks travelling from London to Fos-Sur-Mer on board the 335-metre container ship “Conti Cortesia”, calling at several ports along the coast of Europe, including Rotterdam, Hamburg and Valencia. This route will allow me to familiarise myself with the daily procedures on board and the routines in the ports. I can very well imagine working in the shipping industry. A short internship with a shipping service provider has already given me some initial insight into the processes. Although I only have superficial knowledge of the processes so far, which I would now like to deepen through the internship on board, I find the versatility of the industry fascinating. The international networking and the challenges on board make shipping particularly exciting and appealing to me, and I am particularly fascinated by the variety in my day-to-day work and the technological advances.”

Katerina Zdanov, 18 years old from Marburg (Central Hesse), also currently attends a grammar school
“I’ve been interested in ships for a long time and also enjoy sailing. I therefore wanted to try my luck and applied for the summer seafaring programme to experience what happens on a larger ship, gain practical experience, and learn lots of new things about shipping. Annika Frühsorge and I are travelling on the containership “Conti Cortesia”, owned by the CPO shipping company, for about three weeks along the European coast. We will set sail from London and end our journey in Fos-sur-mer. I can imagine working in the shipping industry in future. I’m particularly interested in marine technology and machinery and it’s certainly exciting to work on board a ship, as every day offers new experiences and challenges that you can overcome together as a crew.”
Captain Ortwin Mühr, Head of the Nautical Inspection Department, CPO Containerschiffreederei (GmbH & Co.)
“With the summer seafaring programme, we like to give young people the opportunity to gain insights into life and work on board our containerships. For us as a shipping company based in Germany, it is important to recruit young people for the technical and nautical sector in order to secure Germany as a shipping country for the long term. The two applicants have already shown very strong and concrete interest in this internship. We are sure that they will make good use of their time on board to gain as broad a picture as possible of this working environment, which is still exceptional today.”
