The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ballast Water and Sediments, adopted by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), has become a key instrument for the protection of the marine environment. The aim is to prevent the unintentional spread of alien species via the ballast water of ships. Seagoing vessels take on ballast water in special tanks to ensure sufficient stability during voyages without cargo (ballast voyage), or with small cargo only.
Since the convention came into force in 2017, its requirements have taken effect gradually. By the end of the transition period in 2024, all ships worldwide had to meet the so-called D2 standard. This means that ballast water must be treated using an approved system before being discharged into the marine environment. In addition, an approved ballast water management plan must be carried on board, along with a valid certificate documenting compliance with the standard.

The shipping industry has invested heavily in modern ballast water treatment systems. Today, a variety of technical designs are available, all designed to guarantee reliable treatment under normal conditions.
However, there are also challenges affecting system operation. Particularly in shipping areas with high turbidity, changing salt content, a strong tidal range or increased sediment content, the effectiveness of ballast water treatment systems can be compromised.

The focus is on a constructive dialogue with authorities, international organisations and technical partners.
